Well, That Was Ugly

An exciting college basketball season and eventful NCAA Tournament ended with a massive thud last night. Congratulations to the Connecticut Huskies for winning the worst title game ever. A final score of 53-41 pretty much sums up what turned out to be an exhibition of ineptitude. Sure, there was intense defense played by both teams, but that doesn’t excuse 88 missed shots, 34 of which were from beyond the arc.
The magical two-year run by Butler shouldn’t be overlooked. Head coach Brad Stevens and his bunch deserve tons of praise for making it to back-to-back championship games. That being said, 18.8% from the field in the biggest showcase game of the season is deplorable, not to mention the worst shooting performance in NCAA history. Failing to convert open looks for the entire second half is ridiculous. Being outscored 26-2 in the paint is laughable. Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack hitting only 5-28 shots is puzzling.
Did UConn play stifling defense? Yes. Did they win despite Kemba Walker being held to 16 points? Yes. Did old man Jim Calhoun outcoach wonderboy Brad Stevens? Yes. Were the Huskies the bigger, more talented team? Without question. Hey, a win is a win, no matter how awful.
This title game was one for the dogs. The Bulldogs had more bark than bite. The Huskies were the better groomed team. Whatever stupid K9 cliche you use, it was a game most hoops fans will soon forget. Here’s hoping you laid money on UConn. At least then you’ll have something to smile about.
