The Detroit Red Wings will try to tighten their grip on the NHL Western Conference lead on Friday night when they travel to the Honda Center for a game against the Anaheim Ducks.  Wings are playing great hockey posting a record of 8-1-1 in their last 10 games.  The Ducks have rounded into form following a dismal start to the season and are now only 2 points back of Pacific Division leading Dallas.

The Ducks looked to be among the worst teams in the league when the season started, but they’ve rebounded to a winning record and are right in the thick of things in the Western Conference playoff hunt.  Statistically, its hard to see where the improvement in the Anaheim team is coming from but the important thing is that they’re winning hockey games.  Anaheim has the #23 scoring defense and the #19 ranked scoring offense.  In recent years the Ducks have done a good job against the Wings on the Honda Center ice, winning 5 of 7 meetings.

We’re not sure that they’ve got enough to get it done against a Detroit team that is playing some of the best hockey in the NHL.  The Wings have a good enough defense–ranked #11 in scoring defense–but have been absolutely torrid on offense.  Detroit has the #1 scoring offense in the NHL at 3.54 goals per game.  That sets up a difficult dynamic for the home team–they really don’t have the offensive weapons to outscore Detroit, but it’s not evident that their defense is capable of shutting down the Wings attack.  Wings have gone Over in 8 of 9 and have already won two meetings with the Ducks this season (1 OV, 1 UN) with average total of 7 goals per game.  We’ll look for Detroit to stay hot with another high scoring victory and play this one accordingly.
