Sportsbooks back in the baseball betting business as the Yankees and Red Sox get the 2010 MLB season underway with a nationally televised game on ESPN.  Obviously, this rivalry needs no explanation and even in the opening game of the season its always a big event when the Yankees and Red Sox tangle.  Fenway Park is the venue and it’ll be a beautiful night for baseball with clear skies, a light breeze and game time temps in the low 60s.

New York Yankees (C.C. Sabathia) at Boston Red Sox (Josh Beckett)

Not sure why the Red Sox are favored here over the World Champion Yankees.  Maybe you’re ‘paying’ for the tradition of the rivalry or the perceived ‘home field advantage’–which is less significant in baseball than in any other sport.  This series was very streaky last year, with Boston winning the first eight games of 2009 before the Yankees took over winning 8 of 9 head to head.  The Yankees were a decent road team a year ago, and from a wagering standpoint were actually more profitable in that situation as opposed to home games where they’re usually a high priced favorite at sports betting sites.  The Red Sox lost money against lefties in 2009, and they’re facing a good one here in C.C. Sabathia.  Sabathia’s career numbers against the Red Sox aren’t particularly impressive, but in all fairness most were when he was a member of the Cleveland Indians.  The Yankees have hit Beckett well throughout his career (4.77 ERA) and the 2010 vintage Bronx Bombers look to be a dominant offensive team.  Yanks have the better offense and better bullpen, and have put together one of the best defensive infields in MLB history.  We look for them to get off to a quick start in the AL West.  Red Sox didn’t do much to get better in the offseason–in fact, losing the consistent Jason Bay and not finding any middle of the order power to take some of the pressure off of an aging David Ortiz are clearly steps in the wrong direction.  We’ll definitely use the Bronx Bombers at a nice price here and look for spots to use them again later in this series.  Unless specified otherwise, make sure to list your pitchers.

Bet New York Yankees (Sabathia) -150 over Boston (Beckett)
