Another day, another rumor/probably true story surfaces regarding Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and his recovery from multiple neck surgeries. In recent days, the drama surrounding the damaged nerves in his throwing arm has ratcheted up big time after a couple of respected NFL insiders publicly stated that Manning is still having trouble throwing a pass.
How soft has the NFL become? Soft enough that Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski was dancing shirtless like a San Francisco club kid after losing the Super Bowl and now apparently soft enough that Brandon Jacobs isn’t willing to stand by his criticism of Tom Brady’s out of pocket wife. By now everyone knows that Brady’s old lady, super model Gisele Bundchen, openly criticized her husband’s teammates after the Patriots’ Super Bowl loss. Brady has yet to put her back in tow
Not being a fan of either Duke or North Carolina isn’t a good enough reason not to appreciate what might be the single greatest rivalry in all of sports, not just college basketball. Unlike other rivalries, Duke-UNC is relevant every season and rarely disappoints. And last night’s thrilling buzzer-beater Duke victory in Chapel Hill provided zero evidence to the contrary.
Sounding like the old man down the street who keeps yelling at kids to stay off his lawn, ex-Patriots safety and current NBC talking head Rodney Harrison disapproves of Rob Gronkowski’s post-Super Bowl defeat partying on Sunday night. Harrison, who prides himself in being old school, believes players should be wallowing in sorrow after losing the game of their lives, not jumping around on a dance floor shirtless.
The social networking hotbed of controversy known as Twitter has once again spawned outrage from an embarrassed professional athlete. In case you missed it last week, Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins was posterized by Clippers forward Blake Griffin on what will likely be the dunk of the year. Perkins took the high road, understanding it’s part of the game. Until he took to Twitter and spotted LeBron James’ tweets.
Gisele Bundchen’s post-Super Bowl comments certainly ruffled the feathers of Patriots fans and players. Her criticism of receivers dropping passes may have been accurate, but in the rough and tumble world of manly man football, the supermodel wife of a pretty boy quarterback is probably better served keeping her opinions to herself. But since she didn’t, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was nice enough to offer the leggy Brazilian some PR pointers.
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony exited last night’s victory against Utah in the first quarter with a strained groin. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for up to two weeks. He suffered the strain after delivering a pass to Tyson Chandler, and limped to the bench moments later favoring his right thigh. He spent most of the evening receiving treatment in the locker room, but did return to the bench in the fourth quarter.
They haven’t made the official announcement yet but every indication is that the Pittsburgh Steelers will hire former Kansas City head coach Todd Haley as their new offensive coordinator. Haley was fired by the Chiefs late this season and will replace Bruce Arians who took the same position with the Indianapolis Colts after being more or less ‘scapegoated’ for the Steelers’ early playoff exit. Haley was an assistant for 10 seasons before being hired for the Chiefs’ head coaching job.
Now that the Super Bowl is over, the NFL will go about the business of transitioning into the offseason. The Scouting Combine, free agency and April Draft are all right around the corner, but until then, football will take a backseat to basketball and hockey. But before we close the books on the season for good, here are some stories making headlines.
Tom Brady need to get his wife–super model Gisele Bundchen–in tow. Gisele was clearly out of pocket when she blasted Brady’s teammates for costing him the Super Bowl. Granted, she had some valid points but her insubordination reflects badly on Brady and suggests that he’s ‘weak in his game’ at home. Bundchen was caught on video by an Internet gossip site serving notice to her husband’s teammates: “My husband can not f—— throw the ball and catch the ball at
