Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson, also known as Strikeforce: Columbus, took place Staurday in Columbus, and featured two championship fights, and two undercard fights. The event was another success for Strikeforce, and concluded with the crowning of Dan Henderson as the new LHW champion. Below is the breakdown of the TV broadcast, and below are the results for the preliminary card.

Light Heavyweight Championship Bout

Rafael Cavalcante (c) vs. Dan Henderson

Both Feijao and Henderson were both feinting and trying to get the other commit to some strikes, but both are hessistant because of the others power. Henderson seemed to be getting off his punches a little quicker than Feijao, but it was Feijao who dropped Hendo toward the middle of the round. Hendo instinctively dove in for a takedown, and ended up on top. He took a minute plus to recover, while peppering Cavalcante with shots that were simply busy work. The second round was close as well, but instead of getting dropped first, Hendo got the takedowns cleanly. He controlled Feijao on the floor, and easily got the round. In the third, Hendo finally landed the shot he was looking for. Feijao circled right into it, and Hendo landed the right hand. It spun Feijao around like a top, and Henderson pushed him to the floor, where he face planted. Dan Henderson dove in and started machine gunning right hands until the ref was forced to stop the fight. Dan Henderson is the new light heavyweight Strikeforce Champion.

Henderson defeated Cavalcante via TKO (punches) at 0:50 of round 3 to win the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship.

Women’s Welterweight Championship bout:

Marloes Coenen (c) vs. Liz Carmouche

This seemed to be a tough test for Coenen, and even with only two weeks notice Carmouche really took the fight Marloes. Coenen started off strong and was getting the better of exchanges in the first round. Carmouche really tried to out muscle the champ, but Coenen stayed very active and simply landed the better strikes. In the second round, Coened snares a guillotine choke from the standing position, but Liz powers out of it, and drives Coenen tot he mat. This is where everything seemed to change. Once Liz got to mount, Coenen seemed to have no answer. Carmouche wasn’t really landing anything that would put Liz in any danger, but she still had no answer for the challengers mount. The third round was more of the same, but when Carmouche went to th well too many times it cost her. Liz took Marloes down in the 4th, but ended up in guard instead of half or side control. Liz left her hand in the party after a punch, and Coenen used it to secure the triangle. After some adjusting, there was no way out for Liz, and she was forced to tap.

Coenen defeated Carmouche via submission (triangle choke) at 1:29 of round 4 to retain the Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight Championship

Middleweight bout:

Tim Kennedy vs. Melvin Manhoef

Everyone in MMA knows how powerful of a striker Manhoef is, and conversely everyone knows once you get him to the ground he almost seems green and he has a tendency to panic. Melvin was landing HARD leg kicks from the beginning, and Tim was staying in the pocket and trading with him. Kennedy was shooting for takedowns, but Manhoef sprawled out of them. Finally, Kennedy converted the takedown, and slid almost effortlessly into mount, where Melvin gave up his back. After taking some shots from back mount, Kennedy fklattened out Manhoef, and sunk in the rea naked choke.

Kennedy defeated Manhoef via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:41 of round 1

Lightweight bout:

Jorge Masvidal vs. Billy Evangelista

The story here was size advantage of Masividal. The undefeated Evangelista just couldn’t get on the inside of Jorge’s punches. Masvidal fought a very safe fight, and that was the disappointing part of the match. Jorge was obviously trying to just get his first win back, and get back in the winning column for strikeforce. This fight was all Masvidal, from bell to bell, but he didn’t do enough for my liking. I hope in the future he really turns up the aggression.

Masvidal defeated Evangelista via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
