With the NBA regular season winding down and the NHL playoffs not getting underway until Wednesday we’ll focus on baseball for the next few days.  In this preview we’ll take a look at Monday action between the Colorado Rockies and New York Mets from Shea Stadium.  Colorado is off to an excellent start this season and currently sits atop the NL West.  The Mets haven’t been as impressive and are currently at 4-5  in the NL East.

We’d advise not reading too much into these teams’ records to date as they’re due as much to scheduling as anything else.  The Rockies are 6-2 including 3-1 on the road but all three road wins came at Pittsburgh.  We expect the Pirates to show some improvement this year but they’re still not exactly a home field powerhouse.  The Mets are 4-5  but have played 6 of their first 9 games on the road and against tough opponents in Philadelphia and Florida.

It’s important to keep in mind the Rockies’ brutal home/away tendencies in recent years. Colorado finished with an 83-79 record, good for third in the NL West in 2010. As usual, the Rockies were strong at Coors Field posting a 52-29 mark that ranked among the MLB’s best. Away from home, however, they were just 31-50 which obviously isn’t good enough for a team looking to contend.  We’re expecting some improvement on their home/away form this season but 4 games isn’t enough to draw any conclusions from.

The Mets were by and large a disappointment in 2010 but they did have a winning record at home (47-34) and have won 5 of the last 7 head to head against the Rockies at Shea Stadium.  The Mets were especially successful in night games on their home field posting a record of 33-21 for just over 10 units of profit.  And that brutal Rockies road record lost baseball betting enthusiasts a whopping  -21.85 units in 2010.  Both Jason Hammel and Mike Pelfrey got roughed up in their season opening appearances but we expect a better showing from Pelfrey in his home yard.  We’ll look to play on the Rockies at home this season, but until they demonstrate some better form away from Coors Field they’ll be a go against on the road.

Bet New York Mets (Pelfrey) -110 over Colorado Rockies (Hammel)
