The top ticket at online sportsbooks for Monday will be the continuation of second round play in the World Cup.  We’ll take a look at the 11:30 AM Pacific start time game between Brazil and Chile.  Brazil, along with Spain, was favored heading into the tournament while Chile managed to advance despite play that wasn’t particularly impressive.

Chile vs. Brazil
June 28, 11:30 AM Pacific

Full disclosure–we’re not sold on Brazil.  We didn’t like them heading into the tournament as we felt they were overvalued based more on their name than the intrinsic quality of this version of the team.  They did nothing in the group stage to convince us that we were wrong in overrating them.  They struggled against North Korea, winning only 2-1 against a team that Portugal would rip 7-0 in their next contest.   They fared better in a 3-1 win against an underachieving Ivory Coast team and then sleepwalked through a meaningless 0-0 draw against Portugal.

While we don’t expect to see Brazil win the World Cup, they should be able to get the job done here.  First of all, Brazil is very familiar with Chile since they play in the same World Cup qualification region.  More significantly, they’ve dominated Chile in recent years winning the last 7 games.  They played twice in the run up to the 2010 World Cup, with Brazil winning both by a combined score of 7-2.  Chile will have to face the Brazillians without their two best defenders, as Gary Medel and Waldo Ponce have been suspended for this game.

Ultimately, we still think Brazil is overrated and we’ll look for the opportunity to go against them as the tournament progresses.  This isn’t it, however.  Look for Brazil to win by 2 or 3 goals, and we’ll lay the -1 on the handicap line.

Bet Brazil -1 -108 over Chile
