Oakland Raiders v Chicago Bears

One of the keys to winning in fantasy football is keeping a close eye on the weekly waiver wire. Ask anyone who was shrewd enough to grab the likes of Michael Vick, Peyton Hillis and Brandon Lloyd during the last couple weeks and they’ll probably regale you with stories of how they are dominating their league. If you are the unfortunate owner of a Pierre Garcon or Terrell Owens, then you are in need of some wide receiver help. Here are five guys worth picking up.

James Jones (Packers) – There are a lot of mouths to feed in Green Bay, so Jones won’t exactly set the world on fire. That being said, he is being targeted in the red zone a lot and is a injury away from starting for one of the league’s most potent offenses. At this point he’s a number four receiver with number three potential. By the way, he has just as many catches (10) as Greg Jennings. Just sayin’.

Kenny Britt (Titans) – Britt is one of the most talented players in the league. He has great size, deceptive speed and is a legit playmaker. Problem is he’s a lazy malcontent who can lose focus at the drop of a helmet. Still, you could do much worse if you are thin at wideout. Vince Young loves throwing deep to Britt, so snag him if you can.

Josh Cribbs (Browns) – Let’s do a quick comparison: Player A has the following numbers through three games: 10 receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown; Player B has 10 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Player A is Josh Cribbs. Player B is Greg Jennings. Toss in Cribbs’ 32 yards rushing and he has only two fewer fantasy points than Jennings. Get Cribbs now. He’s a solid number three receiver in waiting.

Dexter McCluster (Chiefs) – Here are McCluster’s next five opponents after the bye: Colts, Texans, Jaguars, Bills and Raiders. None of those defenses are in any way scary. I think as the season progresses, Todd Haley will find ways to get Dex the ball. He’s definitely a hit or miss guy, but his upside is immense.

Louis Murphy (Raiders) – Recommending a Raider can be hazardous to one’s health, I know. However, Murphy and quarterback Bruce Gradkowski have a nice thing going right now. Eleven catches for 210 yards and a trip six in his last two starts makes Lou a must-own. He could end up as a solid number two receiver by season’s end.
