Former Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox might not be out of work much longer. He is scheduled to interview with the Broncos on Wednesday to possibly fill their coaching vacancy. Fox was fired by the Panthers following their league worst 2-14 season. In nine years on the Panthers sideline, Fox compiled a record of 73-71, qualified for the playoffs three times and earned a trip to Super Bowl XXXVIII, losing to New England 32-29.

Fox isn’t the only candidate being considered by new Executive Vice President of Operations, John Elway. Interim coach Eric Studesville and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell have already interviewed, and Dirk Coetter of the Jaguars and Rick Dennison of the Texans will meet with Elway today. Both Coetter and Dennison served as offensive coordinators for their respective teams last season.

The stink of Josh McDaniels still lingers in Denver, so pegging the right man for the job is critical to help expedite what will likely be a major rebuilding effort. Tim Tebow showed flashes of being able to lead the team under center, but the offense lacks dynamic playmakers and the defense is aging.

Fox has the most experience of all the candidates, but only three winning seasons out of nine doesn’t conjure images of Bill Belichick. Whomever lands the gig will be responsible for coaching duties only, with Elway and GM Brian Xanders handling all personnel decisions such as free agency and the draft.

The Broncos last playoff appearance came in 2005. Since then they are 36-44 and have fielded four different starting quarterbacks.
