As the old saying goes, the numbers never lie. One of the things I enjoy most about the NFL is crunching the stats. Who’s hot, who’s not? Which players are exceeding expectations and which ones are underperforming? What trends are defying logic and what trends are par for the course? So, as we prepare for a fun-filled day of football watching and food consuming, let’s ponder some strange stats from the 2010 season.

  • Just a few of the players with more catches than Randy Moss’s 23: David Gettis, Deon Butler, Josh Morgan, Earl Bennett, Patrick Crayton, Jordy Nelson, Chansi Stuckey and Brandon Gibson. Not exactly a murderer’s row of wide receivers.
  • In his last four games, Peyton Manning has tossed 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. In that same time frame, Sam Bradford had thrown 7 touchdowns and 1 pick and Josh Freeman has thrown 7 touchdowns and 2 picks.
  • In the seven seasons prior to 2010, Broncos wideout Brandon Lloyd caught 15 touchdowns. In ten games this season, he has 7 scores. Somebody is going to get paid in the offseason.
  • Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo has tallied 120 combined tackles in ten games. If he keeps up his current pace, he’ll finish the season with 192.
  • 30.9% of Arian Foster’s carries have gone for first downs. By contrast, only 18.5% of Chris Johnson’s totes have gone for first downs.
  • Guess which running back leads the league in 20+ yard runs? Ahmad Bradshaw. Guess which running back has the most 40+ yard runs? LeSean McCoy with 4.
  • Danny Woodhead has more rushing yards than Marion Barber and Chris Wells.
  • The only quarterback among the top 12 in passing yards with a completion percentage less than 60% is Donovan McNabb with 57.5%. Matt Cassel, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Alex Smith all have higher percentages.
  • In 93 career starts, Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel has 42 interceptions. That equates to almost one pick every other game.
  • In the last six games Steve Johnson and Dwayne Bowe have combined to catch 17 touchdowns, while Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne have combined for 5.

Happy Turkey Day!
